Nation, style, modernism

05.09.2003 - 11.09.2003

This international conference organised by the International Cultural Centre and Zentralinstitut für Kunstgeschichte form Munich was devoted to the issue of instrumentalisation of the 20th-century art and architecture as well as to the role of art and architecture in the shaping of national identity. The first four sessions of the conference were held in Munich and the remaining two took place in Cracow. On the way from Munich to Cracow the participants were able to see the modernist architecture of Wroclaw. An integral part of the conference was also a study tour around the Upper Silesia region, which is particularly interesting because it is full of examples of common Polish and German heritage. The main aim of the trip was to present the problems connected with the protection and promotion of the common cultural heritage.
